In June of 1888, 50 Icelanders from the drought-plagued Dakota Territory crossed the Red Deer River to settle in Markerville. For a time they managed to maintain their language and customs, but soon better transportation methods and increased intermarriage diluted their cultural isolation. Today less than 10 percent of the population is purely of Icelandic descent.
