Atqasuk is located on the Meade River, 60 miles south of Barrow.

The name means "the place to dig the rock that burns." The area has been traditionally hunted and fished by Inupiat Eskimos. Once called Meade River, Atqasuk's population declined in the late 1960s, then was re-established by former residents of Barrow in 1977.
