This Historic Districts covers par of what is now known as Wrangell-St Elias NP and Preserve. Chisana is the site of Alaska's last significant gold rush in 1913. Mining continued in the district until WWII. The Chisana Mining District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
