Cold Bay lies within the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge on the western end of the Alaska Peninsula. Cold Bay is considered to be the gateway to the Aleutian Islands. Archaeological evidence from the area suggests that Cold Bay was once inhabited by a large Native population. During WWII, Cold Bay was the site of the strategic air base Fort Randall.
