Fort Raymond was once the Headquarters of the Harbor Defenses of Seward. The fort was named for Capt. Charles W. Raymond, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. At one time, Fort Raymond consisted of the Seward garrison, fuel oil storage area, a dock, and adjacent housing. Fire-control stations and searchlight shelters were located on Barwell Island within Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.
