Construction of Battery 296 at Fort Tidball on Long Island near Kodiak took place from September 1942 to December 1943. The battery had two six-inch caliber rifles, plus a plotting room, fire control telephone switchboard, shell and powder storage, power plant, and latrine.

The gun emplacements were destroyed after the war, however, two gun shields, major carriage parts, and parts of the guns themselves remain today. Inside the battery, considerable equipment remains including parts of the switchboard.
