The Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Office of Consumer and Business Education is conducting an education campaign to help consumers avoid unscrupulous retailers who may be selling imitation Alaskan Native arts and crafts as authentic. Unsuspecting travelers may spend hundreds of dollars for these items that are not actually made by Alaskan Natives.
A free brochure titled "Alaskan Native Art" is available at our website. This educational material was developed in cooperation with the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the Indian Arts and Crafts Board (U.S. Department of the Interior), and the Alaska Attorney General's Office. The brochure helps consumers recognize genuine Alaskan Native arts and crafts and avoid imitation items when shopping.
The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop and avoid them.
