The Alaska State Legislature created Hatcher Pass Public Use Area, fifteen miles north of Palmer, in 1986. The area is open to a variety of recreational activities, including recreational mining. Independence Mine State Historical Park, as well as a visitor center, is located within Hatcher Pass Public Use Area.
