Pilot Station is located in Wade Hampton Census Area, within the Southwest Region, on the northwest bank of the Yukon River.

Pilot Station is a designated historic place - it was occupied during the wars between the Yukon and Coastal Eskimos who periodically fought when the coastal people traveled up the Kashunak River.

Local riverboat pilots who used the village as a checkpoint named the village Pilot Station.
