Sand Point is on Popof Island, off the Alaska Peninsula in the
Aleutians East Borough. Sand Point was founded in 1898 by a San Francisco fishing company as a trading post and cod fishing station. Aleuts from area villages and Scandinavian fishermen were the first residents. A Russian Orthodox church was built here in 1933, and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Aleutian Cold Storage built a halibut plant here in 1946, and today, it is the home to the largest fishing fleet in the Aleutian Chain. Direct flights to and from
Anchorage are available.
