Scammon Bay is on the south bank of the Kun River, just one mile from the Bering Sea. Scammon Bay was named for Capt. Charles Scammon, who served as the marine chief of the Western Union Telegraph Expedition from 1856-1867.
Scammon Bay is a Yup'ik Eskimo community that relies on commercial fishing and subsistence activities. Winter trails connect Scammon Bay to Hooper Bay and Chevak.
