Slana is located in
Valdez-Cordova Census Area at the junction of the Slana and Copper Rivers at the northern entrance to
Wrangell-St Elias NP and Preserve. The Nabesna Mine opened in the area in 1923. Over 30 different minerals were extracted from this site, although gold was the primary source of profit. Slana developed rapidly in the 1980s when homesteads were offered for settlement by the government.
