Southwestern Alaska includes
Kodiak, the second largest island under the American flag, the Alaska Peninsula and the chain of Aleutian Islands. The area around
Kodiak has been inhabited for thousands of years.
Kodiak was Russian Alaska's first capital. The area is linked to the mainland by the Alaska Marine Highway and scheduled and charter flights. It is one hour by plane from Anchorage and 10 hours by Alaska Marine Highway ferry from Homer.
The wilderness on the Alaska Peninsula includes Katmai National Park and Preserve, famous for its salmon fishing, bear viewing and volcanic activity.
