St. George is located on the northeast shore of St. George Island, the southern-most of five islands in the Pribilofs. Over 200 species of birds nest on the cliffs of St. George Island.
St. George was discovered in 1786 by Gavrill Pribilof, while looking for the famed northern fur seal breeding grounds. The Russian American Company enslaved Aleut hunters from Siberia, Unalaska, and Atka, and relocated them to St. George to harvest fur seal.
Today, more than a million fur seals congregate on the Pribilof islands every summer. The community depends on the the seal population as a major influence on the local culture, economy, and food supply.
