Sutton is located in the
Matanuska-Susitna Borough just north of
Anchorage along the
Matanuska River. It was founded around 1918 as a station on the Matanuska Branch of the
Alaska Railroad. Of interest is the non-profit
Alpine Historical Park, with its collection of coal mining relics, historical buildings, and Athabascan Indian artifacts.
Fossilized leaves and shells can be found in the area along the Jonesville Rd, which goes past the old Jonesville and Eska coal mines on the way to Seventeenmile Lake. River's Edge Recreation Park is located in Sutton at Mile 62.4.
