Upper Kalsag lies on the north bank of the Kuskokwim River, just 2 miles upriver from Lower Kalsag. The original residents were from Kalthagamute, located on a slough four miles southwest of the present site.

Upper Kalsag is an Eskimo village which is strongly influenced by the Roman Catholic church. Subsistence activity provides most of the food sources in the village.
