It is home to Bessemer State, Alabama's largest technical college, and has five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.

Bessemer is located in Jefferson County (North Region), southwest of Birmingham between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham along Highway 150 putting it in the Birmingham, Alabama metro area.
