Search Anniston Alabama

This 1888 Normanesque church features oak and long leaf pine were the woods selected for the interior, which was completed primarily by English builders. In the nave ceiling the reproduced the traditional replica of the ship, the ark, symbolizing the church's function in our spiritual journey. Working from scaffolding, Bavarian craftsmen carved the crosses and other Christian symbols on the beams, including the angel heads on the ends of the pine hammer beams, which are angled to face the altar. The majestic twelve foot altar of white Carrara marble and the reredos (meaning, "screen behind an altar") of brick faced with alabaster were shipped from Italy and England and assembled on the site. The archangels Gabriel and Raphael flank Michael in the reredos' niches. The reredos is surmounted by seven angels bearing symbols suggestive of events in our Lord's life. The church also has a 95-foot tower housing 12 bells.
