In a valley with Red Mountain to the north and Cahaba Mountain to the South, Irondale is located in
Jefferson County (
North Region), on the outskirts of
Birmingham along Interstate 20 placing it as part of the
Birmingham, Alabama metro area.
It is named for a nearby furnace known as the Cahaba Iron Works which produced much of the ammunition for the civil war. Another historic feature of the city is the
Irondale Whistle Stop Foundation that shows much of the cities past.
The city prides itself in its excellent grade schools including the Irondale Community School, Jefferson Christian Academy and Grantswood Elementary School. There is also a great High School with a outstanding Community College.
With the amount of excellent police and fire protection in the city it is a great place to live or even visit while in the area.
