Harrison is located in
Boone County (of which it is the county seat) east of Springdale between
Marshall and
Berryville at the US Hwy 62/412 and US Hwy 65 junction, in the
Ozark National Forest.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 11,594, an increase of 1,658 since 1990.
Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, settlers started moving into the Ozarks seeking free or inexpensive land. Most of these early settlers were poor, ambitious, mainly Protestant, white Anglo-Saxon, rugged mountaineer pioneers from neighboring states of Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
In town, birding enthusiasts and nature lovers can visit a remnant of tall grass prairie set aside as an Arkansas Natural Area. Crooked Creek, along a popular smallmouth bass stream forms Lake Harrison, just blocks from the historic downtown. Its a relaxing spot for strolling and picnicking.
