The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is the state's only comprehensive academic health center. Founded in 1879 as a proprietary medical school by a group of eight physicians with 22 students, the institution is now a part of the University of Arkansas System with about 1875 students in five academic units -- the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Health Related Professions, and the Graduate School. Centers of excellence include cancer treatment, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, pediatrics, and geriatrics.

The University is located in Little Rock, Pulaski County, AR. Total enrollment is approximately 1800. The program leads to bachelors degrees, post bachelor certificates, masters degrees, doctoral degrees, first professional degrees and first professional certificates.
