Prairie Grove is located in Washington County southwest of Fayetteville between Lincoln and Farmington along Hwy 62 near the Illinois River and the Ozark National Forest. Prairie Grove is part of the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers, Arkansas metro area.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,172, an increase of 411 since 1990.

The area’s first Post Office was established in 1840 and was called Sweet Home Post office, as the area was referred to at that time. The earliest accounts of settlement in what is now Prairie Grove dates back to the late 1820’s. There is a spring that is still visible in Mock Park, located in downtown, and looks much as it did at that turn of the century. The spring was long a gathering spot, where locals would drink from the cool waters and socialize.

Popular attractions in the area include: Battlefield State Park, Bob Kid Lake (Excellent Fishing, abundant wildlife, and located less than a mile west of the city) and Aquatic Park (swimming & big slides).
