Washington is located in
Hempstead County northeast of
Texarkana, between
Hope and
Nashville along US Hwy 278. This community is also situated near Grassy Lake, the Hope Wildlife Management Area and the
Old Washington Historic State Park.
Washington was very prosperous until 1874 when the Cairo & Fulton Railroad was built in Hope. The reason that the railroads were built in Hope and not Washington is because the rich people of Washington did not want any loud, noisy trains coming through their relatively quiet town.
Popular attractions within the Washington area include: Ethnic Minority Memorabilia Association Museum, Grandison D. Royston House and the Washington Confederate Monument.
