ASARCO Mineral Discovery Center

Search Sahuarita Arizona

This family-oriented facility offers education and entertainment that focuses on Arizona's mining tradition.

Visitors enter the ASARCO Mineral Discovery Center through a model of a ball mill, like the working mills at the nearby Mission Mine. Displays show how copper is formed and then extracted by miners. The 35-seat theater offers two shows hourly. The Discovery Center also has a collection of historic mining equipment that includes a circa 1908 wooden head frame from the old Copper Glance mine. The on-site Centennial Cactus Garden protects a huge variety of species of desert flora.

A picnic area offers tables adjacent to the equipment display, with a parking lot and restrooms nearby. There is also the Company Store gift shop which contains Southwestern arts ands crafts by local artisans as well as silver, copper and Native American jewelry.

Daily one-hour tours of a working open-pit copper mine and mill are available. Tour schedules vary seasonally, with the last tour beginning at 3:30 p.m.

There is no charge for the center's facilities, but there is an admission fee for the mine tour.

The center is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
