Ajo is located west of Tucson between Gila Bend and Lukeville along Highway 85 near the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

Ajo is part of the Tucson, Arizona metro area.

Two hours away by car from Phoenix, or two and a half hours from Tucson, Ajo is one of Arizona's great finds. Ajo, the birthplace of copper mining in Arizona, has a rich history. Today, the town is a popular tourist destination and retirement community. Ajo, at an elevation of 1,798 feet, is unincorporated. Mountains and the Sonoran desert surround the region.
