Black Hills Back Country Byway
|

|
The 21-mile Black Hills Byway provides principal access to the eastern end of the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area. The byway is unpaved, but is accessible to high-clearance vehicles during dry weather; four-wheel-drive is advised at other times. The road is not recommended for travel trailers or vehicles over 20 feet long. Average one-way travel time is 90 minutes. The best seasons for driving in this area are fall and spring when temperatures are not as extreme. Monsoon rains and occassional flooding can make this route more challenging, so it is advised that you contact BLM's Safford Field Office for current road conditions. Nearby recreation sites accessible by the Black Hills Byway include the Spring Canyon Picnic Area, Black Hills Overlook, Riverview Campground, and the Black Hills Rockhound Area.
