Bright Angel Trail

Search Visit Arizona

This trail starts just west of Bright Angel Lodge and descends 4,460 feet to the river. Only experienced hikers in the soundest physical condition should attempt this or any of the Park trails on foot because the climbs back out of the canyon are arduous. Before attempting a trip, hikers should obtain a free copy of the Bright Angel and Kaibab trails pamphlet from the Grand Canyon National Park Visitor Center. Overnight hikers must obtain a camping permit.

The trail leads 9 miles to the Colorado River and Phantom Ranch. From Indian Garden a branch trail leads 6 miles across the Tonto Platform to Plateau Point, offering a magnificent view of the Colorado River 1,300 feet below. Water must be carried on all canyon trails. If hikers choose to view the depths from the rim, telescopes are available near the Bright Angel Lodge and at Desert View.
