Back Country Byway, Arizona BLM

Search Kingman Arizona

"Get Your Kicks on Route 66" has echoed for decades across the United States of America, and Arizona showcases 42 miles of the "Mainstreet of America" from Kingman to Topock, at the California border. The Historic Route 66 National Back Country Byway begins five miles south of Kingman at the McConnico exit off I40; switchbacks to historic Oatman and the mining community of Goldroad. Don't miss the tri-state overlook area, where scenic views can be had for scores of miles in all directions. Travelers are advised that the portion of highway passing through the mountains is a very narrow two-lane with no shoulders, and extremely tight switchbacks and many steep drop-offs. Wide vehicles and vehicles over 30 feet in length should use extreme caution when driving this road; vehicles are limited to 40 feet long.

The drive can be taken year round, but the best time to avoid the heat is October 1 through April 30. Contact BLM's Kingman Field Office for current road conditions.
