About 11 miles Northeast of Montezuma Castle National Monument Castle is a detached portion of the monument. The limestone sinkhole, 470 feet wide and 55 feet deep, is rimmed by pueblos and cliff dwellings. A source of water to the fields of the ancient peoples, some of the ditches dug A.D. 1200-1300 still are visible and used. This is known as the first irrigation system in the state of Arizona. An updated version of this system is still used to irrigate crops in the state today.
