Pusch Ridge |
Located on the east side of Tucson is Pusch Ridge, a popular hiking spot. Quiet and careful hikers can often catch a glimpse of the wild sheep as they graze protected by federal law.
The area was founded in the early 1870s by George Pusch, who started the Steam Pump Ranch as a waystation for travelers to Tucson from northern points.
Pusch Ridge towers over Tucson and the surrounding desert as one of the most prominent features of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Within the 56,933-acre Wilderness, elevations range from 2,800 to 8,800 feet. From the floor of Sabino Canyon to the upper slopes of Mt. Lemmon, life zones vary from Sonoran desert to subalpine forest. Black bears and coatimundis, Stellers jays and cactus wrens, saguaro cactus and Douglas-fir can all be found here.
