This was the largest one north of San Francisco's in the 1870's, housing nearly 10,000 people working in the coal mines, building the railway and searching for gold. Entering Chinatown from Government Street, you pass the ceramic-tiled Gate of Harmonious Interest, and two hand-carved stone lions, a gift from Victoria's twin city, Suzhou, China. Enjoy the interesting shops and authentic food; and explore Fan Tan Alley (the narrowest street in Canada) to find artists' studios and boutiques.
