With a population of around 2,700 Cumberland was historically an important coal-mining town during the 1880's to the 1930's. In fact, its Chinatown was Vancouver Island's largest mine. Currently a few of the old buildings remain, and the museum contains relics of the area's mining history. North of town is Comox Lake Park which offers camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking and water sports.
