The history of gold mining in British Columbia starts with the great Cariboo Gold Rush, which brought miners up through the
Fraser Canyon to
Cariboo Chilcotin Coast.
Barkerville boomed and then dwindled to a ghost town.
Lillooet was briefly one of the largest cities on the Pacific Coast. Many traces of the gold mining era remain today, and in fact the modern amateur prospector can still find places to pan for gold today.
