Located west of
Kamloops in the
High Country region, this turbulent section of the Fraser River is the result of waters having to travel through a narrow, rocky bottleneck. Hell's Gate can be viewed from a pedestrian foot bridge above, or from an airtram. Water passes through here at a rate of 3.9 million gallons per second during high periods.
A fish ladder built in 1945 gave salmon a way around the most treacherous part. River rafters have been tempting fate by shooting the rapids here on commercial rafting trips.
