Rugged Kootenay Lake stretches 100 km through southeastern British Columbia, west of the Purcell Mountains. It is crossed by a free ferry that connects
Balfour on the west with
Kootenay Bay on the east. Other communities on Kootenay Lake include
Ainsworth Hot Springs and
Kaslo on the west side and
Crawford Bay and
Boswell on the eastern shore.
