Near the southern coast of the Island, Metchosin is one of several towns encompassed by the 26-mile long Galloping Goose Regional Park. Nature trails in the area offer a close look at west coast plants and animals. Population 4,670 Metchosin is the home of Pearson College, one of the United World Colleges, and the location of the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts, in session each July. Take Happy Valley Road to the east side of Sooke Inlet and East Sooke Regional Park for hiking trails, beachcombing, Native petroglyphs, and beautiful picnic sites. Local marinas rent boats for salmon fishing.

The annual festival began in 1976 with a gift of 1,000 cherry trees to the city of Seattle from the Japanese government to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial.
