Nanaimo is connected with the rest of Vancouver Island by the Island Highway. To the south are Ladysmith and Chemainus. To the north at Lantzville, Nanoose Bay, Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Across the harbour, connected by a short ferry ride, is Gabriola Island.
