The commune of Bilzen, population 30,000, is located in eastern Flanders, a few kilometers west of the Dutch city of Maastricht, and just southeast of Hasselt. The Albert Canal skirts Bilzen's northern edge, and the E313 traces its southern border. Beverst, Eigenbilzen, Grote-Spouwen, Hees, Hoelbeek, Kleine-Spouwen, Martenslinde, Mopertingen, Munsterbilzen, Rijkhoven, Rosmeer, Spouwen, and Waltwilder are boroughs within the municipal district of Bilzen.
