Boussu Castle Ruins

A fortress is known to have existed at Boussu by 974, when historical documents indicate a siege took place by the army of Emporer Othon II. The castle also went through numerous sieges and renovations during the 16th century. The manor house survived all the turmoil, and was preserved as a country mansion for a couple more centuries, even while the military aspects of the property atrophied. It was ultimately destroyed during the German offensive of 1944. The site is now the subject of archaeological digs, intended to research the early days of the castle.
