The age of the Chateau de Nil-Saint-Martin is uncertain; the first quoted date in the historical record is 1404, but it is likely to have existed perhaps two centuries earlier. It was converted from a military fortress into a country estate house in 1661 by the de Bethune family. The Chateau is still occupied.
