Celles

Celles is a small, old village, founded in the seventh century by St. Hadelin in a valley surrounded by 4 hills. St. Hadelin's Church, from the 11th century, is a fine example of the romaesque Mosan architectural style. A elaborately carved tombstone in black marble honors members of the local nobility, the Beauforts. A preserved German Panzer tank, originally immobilized by a mine, stands as a monument to commemorate the halt of the Germans in their final WWII push, the Battle of the Bulge.

Celles is a borough within the commune of Houyet. (There are two other Belgian places called Celles: one in Hainaut province, and one in Faimes, Liege province.)
