The citadel of Namur sits squarely at the intersection of the
Meuse River and the and the
Sambre River, across from the city center in front of a forest park. It has seen a lot of action over the centuries, from a famous siege by the Sun King Louis XIV of France, to the Napoleonic Wars, to the World Wars. The battlements have been destroyed and rebuilt several times.
The Citadel park has been developed for the benefit of tourists, with a hiking route that makes stops at several points of interest, including a panoramic vista overlooking the city. Guided tours that take the visitor through the most important military features of the fort are available.
