XX?eldt] and the Dender River come together at Dendermonde, a commune of 43,000 some thirty kilometers northeast of Brussels. Sadly, Dendermonde was decimated during World War I, but there is still much to see. A former meat market dating from 1460 is the site of the current municipal museum. The Church of Our Lady also survived the destruction of 1914, and features Gothic architecture and a wealth of artistic works, including pieces by Van Dyck. The St. Alexius Beguinage is a collection of choc-a-bloc convent houses encircling an inner courtyard; some of these houses contain small history museums.

Appels, Baasrode, Grembergen, Mespelare, Oudegem, Schoonaarde, and Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde are boroughs within the municipal district of Dendermonde.
