Geraardsbergen is a commune just north of the border between
Flanders and
Wallonia, 25 kilometers west of
Brussels. The town center is on a hill adjacent to the
Dender River. Attractions include the 15th-century Gothic town hall and a Benedictine monastery, St. Adrian's Abbey. In the cycling world, the name Geraardsbergen evokes fear because of the "Geraardsbergen Wall", a steep incline that breaks the momentum and will of many racers. The commune of Geraardsbergen, including all its boroughs, has a population of 31,000.
Goeferdinge, Grimminge, Idegem, Moerbeke, Nederboelare, Nieuwenhove, Onkerzele, Ophasselt, Overboelare, Schendelbeke, Smeerebbe-Vloerzegem, Viane, Waarbeke, Zandbergen, and Zarlardinge are boroughs within the municipal district of Geraardsbergen.
