Grand Hornu

Search Hornu-Boussu

Le Grand Hornu was a planned community built around a coal mine, dating from the earliest days of the industrial revolution. The mines closed in 1954, but the facilities have since been restored as a tourist attraction. The site is essentially an open air museum, comprised of warehouses, stables, iron and brass foundries, coke fired furnaces, workshops, offices, and worker's houses which are surprisingly comfortable and progressive for the period.
