The Hautes Fagnes region is a plateau at the far eastern end of Belgium, stretching from
Malmedy and
Butgenbach in the south to
Eupen in the north. It is desolate and largely uninhabited, and has inspired many poets and painters with its open landscape. Much of the area is now a nature preserve. It is popular with both hikers and cross-country ski enthusiasts.
