Hemiksem is a commune of 9,000 immediately south of the city of
Antwerp. The Scheldt river skirts the edges of Hemiksem just prior to entering Antwerp's city limits. St. Bernardius Abbey in Hemiksem offers a history and archaeology museum with an emphasis on brickmaking, the dominant local industry in Hemiksem in centuries past.
