The origins of the ruins that overlook the town of La Roche en Ardenne from a rock outcrop are are uncertain. The fortress is believed to have been built sometime during the 9th century. It was pulled down in the 18th century by the order of Emperor Joseph II of Austria.
Guided tours are available. There have been several recent restoration initiatives, including the excavation of previously inaccessible portions of the castle, though a comprehensive project has not been undertaken.
