Spelled Louvain in French and English, this town was the capital of the Duchy of Brabant. In 1425 the prestigious Catholic University of Leuven was founded, whose descendent, K.U.Leuven, is the largest university in present-day Belgium. Many of the architectural hilights of Leuven are associated with the university. The gothic Town Hall of Leuven is spectacular in its sculptural detail. Leuven is also known for its breweries.

The commune of Leuven is located 20 kilometers east of Brussels, and has a population of 88,000.

Heverlee, Kessel-Lo, Wijgmaal, and Wilsele are boroughs within the municipal district of Leuven.
