Mariemont is named for the 16th century governor Mary of Hungary, but all traces of the original palace built for her are long gone -- successive palaces were destroyed by the army of Henri II in 1554, then burnt down in 1794, and burnt down again in 1960. The building that now stands at the highest point in the park was built in 1970; it holds collections of sculpture, porcelain, books, and ancient art.
